So Many Choices! Teacher Material

Now have students access the student chapter Learning About Bats or distribute the handout.

Have students work in pairs or small groups to fill the “Know” and “Want to Know” spaces.

Circulate among students to provide help and prompting questions such as:

What have you heard or read about bats?

What do you think of when you think of bats?

What do you want to know about how bats live?

Next, have students use the safe search sources to answer their questions. Have them put the answers in the “Learned” space. Circulate to help them find and read the sources.

When students have found answers to the topics in the “Want to Know” space, have them pick one thing from the “Know” space and find out if it’s really true using the same process.

When students are done, have each group share what they found with the class.

After each group has shared, ask them:

Where did you find your information?

  • Highlight how different groups may have found similar answers through different sources.

Was there anything you thought you knew about bats that turned out not to be true?

Did you learn anything else that surprised you?

Would you do anything differently if you were to research a different animal?

If you choose, you can have students record their reflection with the Reflection Recorder.
