Privacy Pirates: Teacher Material

Start by asking students:

If you are playing an online game with other people, what might the people you’re playing with know about you?

If you are watching a video online, what might the video company know about you?

If you send someone a picture or video with you in it, what might the people who see it know about you?

Make sure to highlight  some things people in a game might know about you:

  • The things you say in the chat
  • Your username
  • Your avatar or profile picture

and some things that a video company might know about you:

  • What videos you browsed or searched for
  • What videos you watched
  • Whether you watched the videos all the way through, skipped parts, or stopped watching

and some things that people who see a photo or video might know about you:

  • What you look like
  • What you were doing in the picture or video
  • Anything that’s in the background behind you, like pets or family members
