Media Have Social and Political Implications

The video starts with a graphic of a clock with an arrow pointing to twelve, then the clock morphs into the word ‘Media’ in dark blue font next to the letter ‘M’, which is a light green color. Together they make the word ‘Media Minute.’

The video goes on to say the ‘Media have social and political implications’. This is followed by visuals and narrative about how the media doesn’t just sell products and services, but also sells values, ideas, and lifestyle choices, and it even sells political candidates. We see examples such as a red car and a music player followed by a political candidate on a podium.

Next, we see, “COOL,” a rock-like image, “SAFE,” a bottle that says, “HEALTHLY” on it, and a political candidate on a podium that says “JOBS FOR EVERYBODY.” The video continues about how the media helps raise awareness about the environment and healthy lifestyles. We see a sign that says, “SAVE OUR TREES,” and then a video of a man on a bicycle who’s “burned 1200 CALORIES,” then a plate of natural fruits and vegetables. The video then moves on to discuss how the media is able to communicate to people what is acceptable and what is not acceptable; for example, recycling is acceptable, while bullying is not. We see an image of a young girl recycling, followed by children bullying another girl, with a large red “X” on top of the children. Next, the video explores the trustworthiness of certain people through images; a smiling young boy wearing a cowboy hat is compared to an image of a burglar dressed in black.

The video shows different TV screens that show a celebrity smiling at the camera, followed by a child wearing a yellow construction hat and a safety vest. Underneath is the word, ‘BOYS.’ The visual splits with the boy to the left with a blue background, and a girl wearing a medical-style dress with a doll and a medical cap to the right, against a green background. Underneath the girl is the word, ‘GIRLS’. Next we see a young girl pointing at a dark car pipe; underneath is the beginning of an ‘oil spill disaster movie’ with a like button.

The video continues by highlighting how everyone can have a voice and how it’s important to be aware of the political messages being communicated by the media, since a handful of media creators control the media that we consume, shown as a globe with satellites crossing.

Next, we see a girl with a backpack, surrounded by media devices like a TV with a ‘VOTE NO’ sign, a computer with a ‘STOP CENSORSHIP’ sign, and the word ‘recycle’ on what appears to be a paper. The video ends by saying ‘Be media smart’ and giving the assignment to think about ads, articles, or websites that influence positive or negative social or political change.
