Digital Media are Networked
We’re looking at an animated video about digital media and literacy, which begins with a white, egg-shaped robot waving at us from a light blue circle. Then, the logo for “Digital Literacy 101” appears, with the robot featured in the number 101. The video highlights the differences between traditional media such as radio, television, and newspapers—and the nature of today’s digital media as an interconnected system, where communication is interactive.
The video shows examples of these: a red boombox radio, an old TV with rabbit ears, and a newspaper flying into frame. Then, the video shows a pair of hands, working on a smartphone and the phone is surrounded by tablets, smartphones, and computers connected to a cloud with dotted lines. We also see people on the internet, represented by cartoon figures on grey and white spheres, connected by lines and dots, against a bright white background.
We then are shown a cartoon laptop against a yellow background displaying an image of a flying saucer beam of light shining on a cow floating in space. A robot then peeks into frame and inspects the cow with a magnifying glass. Then, a close up of the flying saucer shining it’s light on a cow in space is shown as a reminder to check the information you find to make sure that it’s real. We then see the robot again, standing in front of the phrase “Be aware and be smart. Digital media smart”. Finally, the video shows the “Digital Literacy 101” and “Media Smarts” logos.
