Analyzing Design: Kagagi

Have students access the student chapter Analyzing Design: Kagagi or display it on a screen or digital whiteboard.

Explain to students that this is the design for the lead character in the animated series Kagagi. The series and the character were created by Jay Odjick, an Indigenous artist from the Kitigani Zibi Anishinabeg community, who said of the character:

“I thought there was a need for a cool, hip, modern Native hero – one who Native kids could relate to or who could resonate with them. Something a little dark, action oriented; something with a touch of Spider-Man maybe – but with some splashes of anti-heroes like Wolverine and Batman in there as well.”

Note: Some Indigenous peoples choose to use the term Native to describe themselves and their people, but it is important to be aware that it is no longer appropriate for non-Indigenous peoples to use.

Have students look at the character design (the image can be expanded by clicking or tapping the plus in the top right corner) and answer the questions below.

If you prefer, you can have students work individually or in pairs to answer the questions and then take them up in class, or have the whole class consider them together.
