Shaping Character

Have students access the student chapter Character Shapes and go through the instructions with them:

Have them take a piece of paper, then draw a vertical and horizontal line to divide it into quadrants.

With a light pencil, have them draw simple shapes like rectangles, circles and triangles overlapping in each quadrants:

  • two in the upper left, three in the upper right, four in the lower left, and five in the lower right.

Then have them draw over those shapes with heavier pencil strokes or a pen, to create creatures or characters inspired by those geometric forms.

Have students trade drawings with another student. How would they describe the character in the drawing?

Next, have them access the student chapter Shaping Character and go through the instructions. Ask them to suggest other words to describe a person and make sure they understand the difference between words that describe someone physically and words that describe someone’s personality.

Have them make a character shape design of the character and then a full character design based on those shapes, and write a paragraph explaining their choices.

  • If you like, you can have students share their characters with the rest of the class through presentations or an art walk.
