{"id":195,"date":"2026-03-26T18:28:44","date_gmt":"2026-03-26T18:28:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/textbook.mediasmarts.ca\/explore-teacher-wrdsb\/chapter\/1757\/"},"modified":"2026-06-24T14:05:28","modified_gmt":"2026-06-24T14:05:28","slug":"1757","status":"publish","type":"chapter","link":"https:\/\/textbook.mediasmarts.ca\/explore-teacher-wrdsb\/chapter\/1757\/","title":{"raw":"Protecting Your Privacy","rendered":"Protecting Your Privacy"},"content":{"raw":"Tell students that using an app or other online service doesn\u2019t have to be an all-or-nothing decision: there are ways of limiting how much of your information is collected and how it is used.\r\n\r\nHave students access the chapter <a href=\"https:\/\/textbook.mediasmarts.ca\/exploringstudentwrdsb\/chapter\/protecting-your-privacy-on-apps-and-websites\/\">Protecting Your Privacy on Apps and Websites<\/a> and go through it with the class.\r\n\r\nThen ask:\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>Do you already do any of these things?<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Are there any things here that you want to start doing?<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Are there things here that you want to talk to your parents about doing?<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n&nbsp;\r\n\r\nAsk them to think back to the privacy audit they did earlier, in particular things about the app\u2019s privacy policy that made them uncomfortable.\r\n\r\nNow have students access the student chapter <a href=\"https:\/\/textbook.mediasmarts.ca\/exploringstudentwrdsb\/chapter\/privacy-psa\/\">Privacy PSA<\/a> and tell them they will be creating digital stories that will serve as a\u00a0[pb_glossary id=\"290\"]public service ad[\/pb_glossary] that will communicate both the most worrying privacy risks in using that platform and the ways in which the privacy tools and techniques they have just learned about can protect against them.\r\n\r\nStudents can do this activity individually, in pairs, or in small groups, as you prefer.\r\n<div class=\"textbox shaded\">\r\n\r\nIf you have already delivered the <a href=\"https:\/\/textbook.mediasmarts.ca\/explore-teacher-wrdsb\/front-matter\/lesson-verifying-information-online\/\">Verifiyng Information Online<\/a> unit, you can have students use the <a href=\"https:\/\/digitalstorymaker-app.mediasmarts.ca\/en\/login\">Digital Story Maker<\/a> to create their stories. If you have not, you can deliver just the <a href=\"https:\/\/textbook.mediasmarts.ca\/explore-teacher-wrdsb\/chapter\/what-is-a-digital-story\/\">Digital Story Maker<\/a> activity since these will not follow the usual Digital Story format.
