A Day in the Life of the Jos

This video is an interactive educational resource for students about digital topics. The resource follows the everyday lives of two characters named Jo and Josie. The resource presents the following topics to the viewer: how to identify the authenticity of a shared story, how to remove an embarrassing photo, how to use online photos for school projects, how to respond to cyberbullying, and how to handle one’s privacy. The resource allows the viewer to make decisions throughout each day, and it presents the consequences of each choice in the characters’ social media feeds. The resource is presented in a series of interactive scenarios across a calendar with each day highlighting an important digital topic.

The video begins with a blurred-out interior shot. Text on the upper left reads “A Day in the Life of the Jo’s.” There is also a total score counter in the upper right. The video is mostly out of focus, but it seems to be featuring a person behind a computer.

The video then shows a website on a computer monitor. The website is titled “Josie’s Social Media Page.” The top of the website has the URL, and the total score counter in the upper right corner now says “18.” On the social media page, there is a post from a user named “Cindy Yu” that says, “Check out buses cancelled…SNOW DAY! Pass it on!” There is also an image of a snow-covered school bus, and the post has zero comments. Below the image, a prompt appears which reads “Cindy mentioned you.” A text box then appears with the question, “Cindy just posted that it’s a snow day! Should Josie share this with all her friends? If it’s real, she’ll save them a long walk in the snow, but if it isn’t they’ll all be late for school.” After a moment, the screen cuts to a new social media post from the same “Cindy Yu.” It says, “Check out the pic of Josie from last weekend’s sleepover. Epic bedhead.” The comment section below the image features a comment from a user named “Jay” that reads “LOL”. The total score counter has dropped to “14.”

The scene then changes to an animation of three students sitting at computers. The text reads, “Jo’s working on a project with his friend Matt in Social Studies class…” The total score has increased to “20.” Then, there is an animated screen showing images of llamas from an online search for “Peru + Llamas + images.” Then, a smartphone appears on screen, displaying a video titled “Ben Falls Asleep in Class.” There are 18 comments on the video. The top comments read “Check out this video of Ben falling asleep in class and not even noticing when we wrote in MARKER ON HIS FACE!” The screen then provides the prompt, “Jay’s videos always get a lot of likes, but Jo’s not totally sure what to do about this one. What should Jo do?” The total score counter is now back at “0.”

Then, a young man is holding a tablet. Next, there is a calendar that reads “October.” There are images of Jo and Josie, and the total score is now at “5.” The next animation shows Josie taking a selfie with butterflies around her. The time on screen is 9:32 AM. Text in the corner states, “A Day in the Life of the Jo’s,” and the total score is now “18.” After a moment, the animation transitions to the question, “What should Jo do?” with the following answer choices: “Blur his face in the photo before sending it,” “Tell Nate he’s just not comfortable sharing it,” and “Set the privacy levels so that only Nate can see it.” The video cuts back to the calendar, and the “October” graphic appears again.

The video continues with an animated classroom scene. Josie, with a guide dog, is sitting at a desk, working on a computer. The time on screen reads 2:30 PM. A text bubble states, “Today’s Careers class is about how you look online…” The video transitions to a graphic of a timeline of Jo and Josie’s weekend.
