Some conventions help convey meaning while others describe accepted practices in a genre.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-cyberstalking\">cyberstalking<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>Following people around online and offline and contacting them constantly.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-data-brokers\">data brokers<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>Data brokers collect personal information in order to create profiles that they provide to advertisers and other third parties.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-default\">default<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>A default function is something that happens automatically or unless you tell it not to. For instance, on many video players Autoplay is turned on by <em>default<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-draft\">draft<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>A major revision of a work. The first finished work is called the \"first draft.\" The published work is called the \"final draft.\"<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-fact-checker\">Fact-checker<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>A person or tool who verifies or debunks claims or stories.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-features\">features<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>Features are the things that you are able to do with an app or other tool.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-game-mechanic\">game mechanic<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>Game mechanics are the specific actions, physical or mental, that players take to achieve the game goal.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-genres\">genres<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>The types or categories into which texts are grouped. For example, literary genres include: novel, short story, essay, poetry, and drama.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-influencer\">influencer<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>Influencers are people who promote products or services on social media. Students may be more famliar with the term \"creator\" which includes both influencers and people who make social media content but don't endorse products.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-inverted-pyramid\">inverted pyramid<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>A style of writing used in journalism. It starts with the most essential and interesting facts, then information that readers are less likely to read.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-irony\">irony<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>A technique using contrast or contradiction for the purposes of humour or emphasis; for example, a statement that has an underlying meaning different from its literal or surface meaning.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-lede\">lede<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>The first two sentences of a news article. They grab the reader's attention and show why the story is newsworthy.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-mirror\">mirror<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>A \"mirror\" text is one that reflects your own experience.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-nut-graf\">nut graf<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>The Who, What, Why, When, Where and How of a news story.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-paper-prototype\">paper prototype<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>A paper prototype is a drawing that shows how an app or program works. It includes all the features, and shows how they work and what happens when you use them.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-parasocial-relationship\">parasocial relationship<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>A parasocial relationship is when you feel like you know someone you only know through media. People can form parasocial relationships with celebrities, influencers and even cartoon characters.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-platform\">platform<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>A platform is anything that lets you share content with other people. Social media and video apps are examples of platforms.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-public-service-announcement\">Public service announcement<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>An ad that is made to tell people important information or convince them to do something positive.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-quantify\">quantify<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>To quantify something means to describe it using numbers.
