The first finished work is called the \"first draft.\" The published work is called the \"final draft.\"<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-dramatic-situation\">dramatic situation<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>A dramatic situation is when one or more people are in circumstances that create a problem that must be solved.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-explainer\">explainer<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>A news article that provides explanations or analysis as well as facts, but does not try to persuade you.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-explicit-input\">explicit input<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>A signal that you know you're sending, such as hitting the Like button.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-expressionist\">expressionist<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>A media tool serves an expressionist purpose when it affects how you feel about what's happening, like when sad music plays in the background.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-fair-dealing\">Fair Dealing<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>In Canadian law, Fair Dealing is the rights users have to use a copyrighted work without permission from its owner.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-false-consensus\">false consensus<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>Making it seem like everyone agrees on a topic where there is actually still debate.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-false-dissent\">false dissent<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>Making it seem like there is still debate on an issue where nearly all experts agree.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-features\">features<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>Features are the things that an app or device is able to do.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-finite\">finite<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>Having a natural limit or end.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-framing\">framing<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>When talking about news, framing is how outlets present a news story. Framing will tell you how important they think a news story is and what kind of story it is.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-genre\">genre<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>Genre is the types or categories into which texts are grouped. For example, film genres include action, suspense and comedy. There are also more specific sub-genres such as superhero, romantic comedy, thriller and film noir.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-hard-news\">hard news<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>News that is timely and considered to be about an important topic.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-implicit-input\">implicit input<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>A signal you may not know you're sending, such as how long you watch a video.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-intersectionality\">intersectionality<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>Many people identify with more than one historically marginalized or under-represented group. Legal scholar Kimberl\u00e9 Williams Crenshaw coined the term \u201cintersectionality\u201d to conceptualize \u201cthe way that different identity markers, such as race, gender, sexuality, and class, interact and affect each other.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-juxtaposed\">juxtaposed<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>Placed next to one another in time or space.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-juxtaposition\">juxtaposition<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>Placing two things next to one another in time or space.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-medium-shot\">medium shot<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>A shot in which most of a person, but not the wider background, is visible.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-moral-dilemma\">moral dilemma<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>A situation where it is not obvious which choice is right or wrong.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-moral-disengagement\">moral disengagement<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>Convincing yourself that it is all right to do something you know is wrong, or to not do something you know you should.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-narrative\">narrative<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>A media tool serves a narrative purpose when it helps to tell the story more clearly, such as by showing an important detail.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-newsworthiness\">newsworthiness<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>The factors that decide whether or not something will be seen as news.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-opinion-article\">opinion article<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>A news article that is openly trying to convince you of the writer's opinion.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-optimization\">optimization<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>Training an algorithm to achieve a particular goal.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-pan\">pan<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>When the camera moves from side to side during a shot.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-platforms\">platforms<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>A platform is anything that lets you share content with other people. Social media and video apps are examples of platforms.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-privacy-policy\">privacy policy<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>The policy that explains what the company that operates and app or website will do with the information it collects about you.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-privilege\">privilege<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>\u201cPrivilege\u201d means the advantages that come from being part of a dominant or majority group (White, male, heterosexual, non-disabled, etc. ).<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-public-domain\">public domain<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>A work that is not copyrighted is in the public domain. That means anyone can use it in any way they want.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-public-service-ad\">public service ad<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>Ads that perform a public service rather than sell a product.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-reaction-shot\">reaction shot<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>A shot which tells the audience how to react emotionally to what we've just seen.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-recommendation-algorithm\">recommendation algorithm<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>An algorithm that guesses what you are likely to want to see and shows it to you.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-render\">render<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>Rendering turns a project file into a format that can be downloaded and played by others.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-rule-of-notice\">rule of notice<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>Rules of notice are the techniques, codes and conventions that media makers use to tell you what to notice and how to feel about what's happening.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-scene\">scene<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>Two or more shots in a video that make up a distinct part of the narrative.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-segments\">segments<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>In a digital story, a segment has one image and one video clip.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-sext\">sext<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>A nude, semi-nude or intimate image or video.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-soft-news\">soft news<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>News about a topic that is not seen as urgent or very important, like trends or celebrities.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-stereotype\">stereotype<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>Stereotyping means portraying members of a particular group in just one or a small number of roles, treating all members of a group as being the same, or emphasizing the ways in which a group is different from the (presumed) audience<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-storyboard\">storyboard<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>A tool used for planning shots.
