For example, if the algorithm is optimized for watch time, it need to know what will make <em>you <\/em>watch longer.\r\n\r\nThere are two kinds of inputs: [pb_glossary id=\"494\"]explicit [\/pb_glossary]and [pb_glossary id=\"495\"]implicit[\/pb_glossary]. Explicit inputs are ones you <em>know <\/em>you are giving to the algorithm, while implicit inputs are ones you don't know you're sending. These come from the app or website watching what you do or getting information about you from someone else. For example, YouTube can use your Google search history, because they are owned by the same company. Other apps or websites may buy information from [pb_glossary id=\"282\"]data brokers[\/pb_glossary].\r\n\r\nHave students complete the sorting exercise in the student chapter <a href=\"https:\/\/textbook.mediasmarts.ca\/navigatingstudent\/chapter\/the-cold-start-problem\/\">The Cold Start Problem.<\/a> Go through the inputs and point out that these are by no means <strong>all<\/strong> the inputs that algorithms use, just some examples.\r\n\r\nOnce students have sorted the inputs into explicit and implicit ones, ask:\r\n<div class=\"textbox shaded\">\r\n\r\nCan you think of any other explicit inputs? (If someone could see everything you do on your phone or computer, what would they know about you?)\r\n\r\nAre there any implicit inputs they feel uncomfortable with apps, websites or advertisers knowing about?\r\n\r\nWhy might algorithms rely more heavily on implicit inputs over explicit ones?\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n&nbsp;\r\n\r\nAfter students have discussed for a few minutes, explain that algorithms rely on implicit inputs to overcome the Cold Start Problem.
