Witnessing Online Meanness and Cruelty: Moral Dilemmas

Have students access the student chapter Witnessing Online Meanness and Cruelty: Moral Dilemmas, or share it on a digital projector or digital whiteboard.

Have them watch the video and then answer the questions in the Cornell Notes interactive activity. When they have written their answers,  take up the questions with the class:

Facts and Principles:

  • What are the relevant facts in this scenario?
  • What moral principles are in conflict?

Challenge question: The top reason Canadian kids give for being mean or cruel online is that they did it to get back at someone for something that target did to them or to a friend. Does that change what you think about online meanness and cruelty?

Variables:

Think of at least one new detail that might change how you see things.

Challenge question: Can you think of a situation where your relationship with Jody, Khalil or Aaron might change what you think was the right thing to do?

Options:

List at least three different things you can do that might make things better.

Identify which of those you think is the best choice and explain why, giving at least two reasons.
