Can AI Remix?
Ask students if they are familiar with generative AI such as large language models (e.g. chatbots) or AI image generators.
Have half of the class access the student chapter Are Deepfakes Remixes? and have the other half access the chapter Are Chatbots Remixes?
Have students watch the video in their assigned chapter and then complete the accompanying interactive activity to identify ways in which making media with generative AI is like or unlike remixing. (If you like, you can have students do this part of th exercise in pairs or small groups.)
When students have finished the interactive activity, lead a class discussion on whether or not generative AI is a form of remixing and whether it follows the best practices for ethical remixing identified earlier in the lesson.
If you are stopping the lesson here, have students write a short essay making an argument either that generative AI is or is not an example of remixing. Use the rubric to assess the essay.
If you are delivering the full lesson, you can have students write a brief reflection on the same topic to serve as a knowledge check.
