Unpacking Privilege
Have students access the student chapter What is “Privilege?” and go through it with the class.
Then have them access the Privilege in Media student chapter and complete the interactive activity to reflect on how they may be privileged or disadvantaged in different ways. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can lead a brief discussion about privilege in media and intersectionality.
Many people identify with more than one historically marginalized or under-represented group. Legal scholar Kimberlé Williams Crenshaw coined the term “intersectionality” to conceptualize “the way that different identity markers, such as race, gender, sexuality, and class, interact and affect each other.
